چکیده

INTRODUCTION Pulse oximetry is a useful tool for clinical and investigational purposes for indirect measurements of oxygen saturation [1-3]. Measurement of oxygen saturation with pulse oximetry (SpO2) can be used for evaluation and control of hypoxemia in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). As pulse oximetry is a non–invasive device, it can be used instead of arterial blood gases (ABG). Pulse oximetry is based on two physical principles. Comparison of two new generation pulse oximeters with arterial oxygen saturation in critically ill children.

OBJECTIVES To compare the performance of two new generation pulse oximeters, one with enhanced signal extraction technology (SET) and other without enhanced SET in detecting hypoxemia and to correlate it with arterial blood gas analysis. METHODS Forty-eight patients, admitted to pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) of a teritiary care teaching hospital in India for critical care and support d...

Accuracy of pulse oximetry in children.

OBJECTIVE For children with cyanotic congenital heart disease or acute hypoxemic respiratory failure, providers frequently make decisions based on pulse oximetry, in the absence of an arterial blood gas. The study objective was to measure the accuracy of pulse oximetry in the saturations from pulse oximetry (SpO2) range of 65% to 97%. METHODS This institutional review board-approved prospecti...

The oxygen affinity of sickle hemoglobin.

The right-shifted oxyhemoglobin dissociation curve of sickle cell disease (SCD) has been thought to result in abnormally low arterial oxygen saturation (S(o)(2)), even when oxygen partial pressure (P(o)(2)) is normal. However, without polymer formation (minimal under normoxic conditions), HbS oxygen affinity is normal. We hypothesized that in SCD, in vivo S(o)(2) is normal when P(o)(2) is norma...

The accuracy of pulse oximetry in emergency department patients with severe sepsis and septic shock: a retrospective cohort study

BACKGROUND Pulse oximetry is routinely used to continuously and noninvasively monitor arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2) in critically ill patients. Although pulse oximeter oxygen saturation (SpO2) has been studied in several patient populations, including the critically ill, its accuracy has never been studied in emergency department (ED) patients with severe sepsis and septic shock. Sepsis res...

Pulse Oximetry Overestimates Oxygen Saturation in COPD.

BACKGROUND Measurement of oxygen saturation with a handheld pulse oximeter is widely practiced as a surrogate to invasive arterial blood gas analysis. Oxygen saturation is an important parameter in cases of COPD, but there are insufficient data on the role of pulse oximetry in patients with COPD, moreso in diseases across its spectrum, such as chronic bronchitis and emphysema. We assessed the p...
